"Humor is the great thing, the saving thing. The minute it crops up, all our irritations and resentments slip away and a sunny spirit takes their place."
You posted this at an interesting time. I've been reading "A Tramp Abroad" on and off for the past week, and it's absolutely brilliant in parts. Wanders a bit too much for my taste, but some sections are so good that it actually bothers me.
I don't know if you've read it, but there's a section in which Twain describes "The French Duel," and it may very well be one of the funniest things I've ever read in my life. It's clever, well paced, and a strange combo of over-the-top and subtle.
Here's a link to the tale of the French Duel: click here.
It can be read on its own, without spending any time on the bits of the book that come before or after.
If you're ever looking for something genius to read, that ought to serve well.
Being a fellow native Missourian, I was forced to read some of Twain's writings as an uninterested adolescent, but my retention level at the time was much lower than your average bovine.

Bummer. I just tested the link from your site, and it looks like Project Gutenberg doesn't allow deep linking.
Hm.
Well, anyway, the tale of the French Duel is really funny, even if Project Gutenberg won't let me prove it.
Link appears to work fine. I'll check it out.
